Ronaldo back on track
By NEIL CUSTIS
CRISTIANO RONALDO will play for Manchester United on Saturday — six weeks
ahead of schedule.
The teenager returns to training today after a surprise early exit for
Portugal from the Olympics.
Ronaldo, 19, said: “It was the chance of a lifetime to play in the Olympics.
“But United is very important to me and I want to get back playing for them
as soon as I can.”
Boss Alex Ferguson feared Ronaldo would be in Athens for the duration.
He then thought he would have to give Ronaldo a month’s rest.
In fact, Ronaldo has probably had more rest than a lot of the players,
having played only twice since Portugal lost in the final of Euro 2004.
With injuries, availability and form affecting United, Fergie is ready to
throw Ronaldo straight into the side for the home game against Norwich on
Saturday.
Ferguson had let it be made quite clear he was furious that winger Ronaldo
and Argentina’s Gabriel Heinze had both been called up for Olympic duty.
Ronaldo, who cost United £12million a year ago, had already played a full
Euro 2004 while Heinze played in the Copa America.
In the end, Ronaldo turned out in only two games as he was suspended for
Wednesday night’s final group match having already received two yellow
cards.
Portugal lost that match 4-2 to Costa Rica, their second defeat of the
tournament, and went out.
Heinze, signed by Fergie for £6.9m in June, is still involved with
Argentina, who face Costa Rica for a place in the Olympic semi-finals
